DIYARBAKIR, Turkey - A senior Kurdish politician said one person was killed Wednesday, when police opened fire on Kurdish protesters and cancelled a meeting with the President, Anatolia reported news agency.
Selahattin Demirtas said that the incident occurred in the town of Bismil Southeast, where the Kurds held a demonstration to protest against a decision by the electoral authorities to disqualify several prominent Kurds to stand in upcoming elections.
Local officials contacted by AFP can confirm only several people injured, among whom three in a State serious, while a witness reported seeing a death.
Demirtas said that he would go to a meeting with President Abdullah Gul later Wednesday, was expected to ease tensions on the deletions candidates.
