End of rule of Gbagbo but uncertain future of Côte d'Ivoire - ABC Online

ELEANOR HALL: Internationally recognized of C?te d'Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara, President says his country has entered a new era of peace and hope.

The President was speaking after his rival, that Laurent Gbagbo has been captured in a dramatic assault on his stay in the capital Abidjan.

Laurent Gbagbo urged his troops to lay down their arms, but it is not pas clear if its supporters are willing to abandon the struggle, that the reports of Barbara Miller.

BARBARA MILLER: It appeared that the fight had gone of Laurent Gbagbo at the time that the cameras were on him after his arrest.

ALASSANE OUATTARA (translation): our country has turned a painful page in its history. After more than four months of crisis after the elections, with so much loss of human lives, here us at the dawn of a new era of hope.

BARBARA MILLER: But Gbagbo supporter, George Abdon Bayeto, told the BBC, the fight will go on.

ABDON BAYETO GEORGE: Laurent Gbagbo is a human being, is an idea and a vision.

They took of human beings, but what about the idea and vision? What they will do with it? We will fight, the fight the fight continues, until proper democracy is installed.

BARBARA MILLER: Alassane Ouattara was not came to power. Laurent Gbagbo has acquired 46 percent of the votes and has a huge support in the South of C?te d'Ivoire.

William Fitzgerald, Assistant Undersecretary for African Affairs in the US State Department, concedes Alassane Ouattara job won't be easy.

WILLIAM FITZGERALD: It will be very, very difficult political transition. Obviously, there is still violence going on in Abidjan. It is not just because Laurent Gbagbo is arrested. No, on the contrary.

But slowly, he had to deal with the problem of security, the problem policy and also, of course, the economic problems.

And I think it begins to recharge and revitalize the Ivorian economy and spinning off jobs for all Ivorians - not only the southerners, not only the people of the North - I think it will succeed in bringing together the two sides.

BARBARA MILLER: Up to one thousand Ivorian are considered were killed in the fighting in recent months.
