Côte d'Ivoire General fled Embassy

Spokesman Clayson Monyela said GEN Phillippe Mangou left Sunday. He could not say where Mangou was led, or if he could join Laurent Gbagbo after his desertion last week.

"I can only confirm that he left the Embassy," said Monyela, who was reached by telephone in Johannesburg.

Mangou sought refuge with his wife and five children as an army to install rival of Gbagbo raised on the outskirts of Abidjan.

Abidjan has days were intensely awaiting the final assault by an armed group to overthrow Gbagbo and install the President democratically elected Alassane Ouattara.
